The Greco SS replaces the Greco SG at some point in 1977. The new headstock design depicted in the 1979 catalog does not seem to have been used very often that year, and was no longer used by 1980. The lineup was redesigned with great attention to historical accuracy in 1980 with the introduction of the Super Real series. The Mint Collection is introduced in 1982 and although the name is no longer used after 1989, most models continue largely unchanged, except for the loss of lacquer finishes, through 1992. In 1993, the SS lineup was reduced to just two models, and in 1996 the last remaining model was discontinued with no replacement.
Most of Greco SS models were made in Japan by Fujigen, although some in the late 1980s and early 1990s were built by Tokai in Japan and Cort in Korea. Tokai builds have no serial number and are otherwise very similar to Fujigen models. Cort builds can be identified by a scarf joint at the headstock, larger nut, thicker logo font, chrome hardware, mini-pots and lack of serial number.
Note: changes in features were not unilateral and consistent. For example, the bell-shaped truss rod cover started being phased out in 1981, but could still be found throughout that year, even on examples built after others sporting the new truss rod cover. The same appears to go for the Greco inlay changing from a closed "O" to an open one; the first open "O" logos appear in late 1981, but closed "O" logos can still be found through the end of 1982.
SS-500[]
This model is very similar to a short-lived Gibson SG model, even down to the 1st fret inlay. However, the SS-500 was introduced before the Gibson, so it is merely a coincidence.
Note: 1977-1978 catalogs depict multi-ply pickguard, but production models do not seem to be equipped that way. Catalogs also specify a Maple neck, but observations prove the use of Mahogany.

This is a copy of a 1975-1979 Gibson SG Standard. In August or September of 1981, the inlay changes its design.[9][10] 1981 catalog mislabels neck as 3-pc. Renamed SS-60 in 1982, this would become the only SS model to continue as part of the Super Real series after the Mint Collection was introduced. Although the 1984 catalog was the last to feature this model, production continued until at least April of 1985.[11]

The pickguard depicted in the 1980 catalog is a different (and less accurate) design than most examples sport. It may have been a pre-production model, or maybe early units shipped with this pickguard design. 1980 catalog also mistakenly refers to Walnut finish option as Wine Red. Catalogs all used an outdated picture of a 1981 SS-700 for this model, so it was never pictured with the single ring tuners or later Greco logo font. 1982 catalog mistakenly specifies polyester finish.
